Why Your Fitness Progress Offends the Crowd

It’s January, and the SupaNewYou community is buzzing. We’re lacing up, hitting the bootcamps, and resetting our nutrition plans. But there’s a part of the workout that doesn’t happen in the gym: preparing your mind for the people who won’t understand your change.

When you decide to level up your health, you aren’t just changing your physique; you’re changing the “social script.” And for some people in your life, that script was comfortable just the way it was.

The “No Fun” Trap

Have you noticed how society makes it easy to be unhealthy? If you stay out late and eat poorly, you’re “living your best life.” But the moment you prioritize a Supa Workout or choose a high-protein meal over junk, the comments start.

“Oh, you’re no fun anymore.” “Is one drink really going to kill you?”

As we discuss in our community, fitness is a lifestyle. It’s not a “phase.” But when you’re “locked in,” it often makes others feel “uncomfortable” because it reminds them of the consistency they haven’t found yet. Don’t let their discomfort become your doubt.

The “Switch-Up” is Real

As your body starts to form and you start getting that respect and attention you’ve earned, be ready for the “switch-up.”

I’ve seen this happen to both men and women in our circles. You’ll hear things like, “You’re getting too muscular,” or “You think you’re all that now.” People might even try to “villainize” you or act like you’re not there.

Here is the truth: Your body is your billboard. It tells the world you have discipline. To a person who struggles to keep promises to themselves, your success feels like a “low blow.” They might try to undermine what you’ve done because it’s “too hard for them” and they need a defense mechanism to dismiss your hard work.

Keep Wearing Your Fit with Pride

Being in shape isn’t about being “better” than anyone else, it’s about making better decisions for yourself.

When people start with the fitness jokes or the “backhanded compliments,” remember why you started:

To manage chronic conditions.

To avoid muscle loss and stay mobile as you age.

To feel “fit,” “lean,” and “strong.”

Don’t Let the Circle Pull You Back

The sad reality is that many people fail their goals because their “circle” pulls them back into old habits. This year, pay close attention to who is cheering for your growth and who is trying to “fit-shame” you back into the crowd.

Your journey is yours. It doesn’t have to make sense to anyone but you. If they want to hate, let them. Use that energy to fuel your next workout. Ignore the negativity and keep moving forward.

Stay Locked In. Stay Supa.
